A Satisfying Newborn Baby Bed & other Clues For a Safe Sleep
22nd Oct 2021
Babies need multiple times extra care and safety than a grown-up. Especially for Newborn babies, they may be tiny, but the time dedication required by an infant is more than the one you give to a grown baby.
During naps, adequate measures for safe and hassle-free sleep ensure your kid’s growth and well-being. Now grown-up humans can sustain any sleeping position and the environment with ease due to being strong, self-reliant and experienced. A Newborn is dependent on their caregivers and is more prone to succumb to adversities/accidents being unable to act.

Taking care that the infant sleeps well, is warm and out of any possible dangers is the first attribute to sustainability. Here are some clues for your newborn baby’s security and your peace of mind.
- The foremost step before acting is the settlement of resources. To ensure better sleep, get a comfortable bed for your kid. While a baby is under 6-12 months of age, don’t share the bed; get a newborn baby bed for the little one.
There are many reasons for not sharing the sleeping place. One of them is SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and other risks and accidents.
You should also not share a bed if any of the parents smoke, are heavy sleepers due to drugs and medicines, have consumed alcohol, are tired, etc.
Also, adequate room is necessary for development if the baby is premature and underweight (less than 2.5kgs).
Bassinet and Crib are the popular types of Newborn Baby Beds. Cribs are big and take more room (can be used for the baby as a bed even after they grow beyond one year). Bassinets are less room consuming, less expensive and can be used only when the kid hasn’t started moving yet. Choose the Newborn Baby Bed you want. However, ensure it has a proper room for your kid to sleep and relax in.
- Satisfy all the safety standards implemented for a crib/bassinet to qualify as an acceptable Newborn baby bed. Standards such as:
- The Slats of your bed should not be more than 2 ⅜ inches apart. There is a possibility that the newborn’s head will be caught between the slats if they are broader than the stated size.
- The void between the mattress and the sides & ends shouldn’t be more significant than 13/16 inches as the wider gap can trap your baby’s arms, legs or head.
- Avoid placing doonas, pillows, Bumper Pads etc., when the baby is in bed. The kid can overheat or suffocate, and this can cause a danger to their life.
- The newborn should permanently be settled to sleep on their back. Sleeping on the sides or the stomach raises the issues of suffocating and choking. Sleeping on the back quenches the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI).
- Provide Warmth to the baby, don’t overheat or chill them. The newborn should be covered only as much as they need, neither under nor over. Another prominent matter to take care of is the head & face. Babies should wear clothes that let them breathe and finish off till the shoulders. Keep the head and face uncovered and relaxed. All the temperature control is from the face; keep it free.
Be flexible with the dressing according to the changes in the degrees. If it is winter and your baby isn’t feverish, dress them in fully covering clothes (barring the face & head) like a sweatpant paired with a cotton t-shirt and put a blanket accordingly. Wrapping them in a breathable muslin or cotton cloth can keep the required temperate and provide a sound experience.
But, when the atmosphere is warm and cosy, wearing sleeveless romper suits with the blanket tucked till shoulders are advisable. Accordingly, a sleeping bag is also one of the options for dressing up.
